USS Copernicus On-Line Story part 1

Captain’s personal Log 10/02/10 1300hrs Starbase 5
My name is Captain Ekim. I am a Terran and the Commander of the USS
Copernicus, a ‘Steam-runner’ Class Ship. Our mission is to patrol our
assigned Sector of the Alpha Quadrant note any unusual phenomena and
relay any communications to the nearest Starbase.
I stand in my office, looking out the observation port at the
unimaginable number of unblinking stars that spread out before me. How
peaceful everything seems. The Dominion War’s have been over for quite
some time now and the Federation and it’s allies have gone back to
exploring the Alpha Quadrant in peace. The Federation Medical Corps has
had more than a little success in getting the Jem’Hadar off the
“White.” But they still had a way to go in their endeavor.
A glance into Ops, showed an efficient group of officers at work. The
Copernicus was one of the lucky assignments. We were not near any of
the action, but played a major roll in relaying communications back and
forth between the Federation Posts and the Allies. I felt sorry for
those on DS9 and at the same time a bit envious that they got to see
some action. But that was all now in the past.
With the absence of war, the trade routes had reopened; more passenger
liners and freighters were traveling than ever before. It is now the
responsibility of the Copernicus to relay many of these communications
along with Federation communications to their final destinations.
Most of the crew members who had been on the ship since it was built,
had departed with the exception of a few. I was one of those who stayed
and am the Commanding officer. My 1st Officer has been transferred and
is now a Captain and the Commanding Officer of Cabot Station, which is
located in another Sector. I have a new 1st Officer, her name is Rissa;
she is untested, but she seems willing to take on the job. Time will
tell how well she does.
Our ship is populated, for the most part, by humans, however there are,
Vulcans, Klingons and a Romulan or two within our walls. Some are
Federation Officers, others are civilians, a lot of civilians.
Actually, the work force is made up mostly of Federation Officers
overseeing civilian contractors, at least in the area of ship
We have just gotten a new group of recruits. They looked like a pretty
good group so far. We’ll be assigning crew quarters, ship ID’s, handing
out ship rules and getting everyone settled into their assignments. I
think I’ll have the ship’s Chef fix something special for them for
their first on ship’s meal. Yes, there are always the replicators, but
nothing beats a real meal cooked by a real chef! Especially the one we
We are at Starbase 5, being retrofitted. The ship is under going some
remodeling at this time which will disrupt some assignments for a
while. The Quartermaster Depot is being remodeled. The Quartermaster
Depot will carry items available to the crew assigned to the ship.
There is a virtual “shopping center,’ a center of commerce, anchored by
a wily Ferengi by the name of ‘Ylan.” His place is called ‘Not-Quarks’
and will stock other items which can be purchased. Not-Quark’s is a
place much like Ten Forward on the Enterprise where the ship’s crew can
relax, shop and have fun.
But, there is a portion of the ship that I, unfortunately, cannot tell
anyone about. New equipment is being installed there right now. Very
important new equipment which I hope we will not be needing.
Well, time to see Chef and get that special dinner ordered. “Number
One, you’re in charge.” The CO heads over to the turbo lift, the doors
open, Captain Ekim enters, the doors close.
